Thanks. You are correct. Shader effector in C4D to transform the Y position of the pins. This is my first attempt at using the effector and I can't tell you much more than that, although I will be looking into this effector more thoroughly as it seems like you can do a lot with it.
The image I used for the logo was originally black & white. However, by adding difference clouds to the image in photoshop allowed for the variation in height, giving it more "realistic" or random variations. This could have been achieved in the random effector, but I was happy with the easier approach.
Like I mentioned, I think this technique opens up all sorts of possibilities, not least of which would be using a video instead of a still image to move the pins for a video.
Ah yeah that seems like a really powerful tool, would love to see something with video as the input . I have never actually used C4D, but I wonder if there is something similar to this in Maya?
