Heraldry comes from Anglo-Norman herald, from the Germanic compound harja-waldaz, "army commander." The word, in its most general sense, encompasses all matters relating to the duties and responsibilities of officers of arms.

I love everything but the font chosen for "USA." It might be because "2012" and "Presidential Election" is not of any drastically non-traditional font, so the main type seems a bit out of place. Personally I'd love to see something a bit more toned down but not the typical "governmental" font that they always use; times, arial, etc, etc.
I've been studying arms and the meanings of them. Though it wasn't of the Germanic kind (mine was mostly researching my own heritage's Scottish arms), there seems to be a commonality between elements that adorn shields. The crown is perfect with the wings and background elements (are those scepters? Either way they look great). This obviously points to a group/person of HIGHEST nobility (as you have pointed out). Great job!

Wow, some extended and well-thought commentary. So rare for DA, a site that purports itself to be a meeting ground for artists. Mostly silent artists in my experience (me being a mouthy guy). So big kudos for your time, effort and feedback. Bravo. You show how it is to be done!

It's funny, I have received feedback from behance.com with a totally 180 degree different take on the USA, i.e.:

Nick Adam Aug 26th at 7:53pm
Dear lord, that USA is spectacular.

so I chalk this up to personal opinion rather than objective review. I would say that IMHO, the lettering of those three central items have an appropriate modernist historicism to them. That's why I went that way, but to each his or her own.

Be that as it may, I most whole heartedly welcome and appreciate your commentary and pray that any other observers take note of your review and realize that THIS IS HOW ITS DONE and THIS IS WHY WE'RE HERE and STOP BEING SO FUCKING TIMID and make DA a worthwhile place to really exchange useful feedback. FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

Thanks much. I'll be here all week. Tip your waitress. Try the veal.

And Alex, do please stop by more often. I look forward to any time you have to spare on my little pictures.

HAHAHA!!! I appreciate the compliment. I still like the design either way, though. You're totally correct in that people are too timid when it comes to critiques. So what if you bruise some feelings? It's to ensure that the design is at its best and highest standard(s). Otherwise some 14 year old kid can call himself a designer because he sort of figured out parts of his stollen Photoshop software. Then we all lose lol.
I'll be sure to subscribe to you since I (unknowingly) liked a few other of your designs. Have a good one!
