What program/programs do you usually use to make this kind of digital art?

Art like this begins as an Adobe Illustrator layout, layered. This is then split into it's component parts and dropped one-by-one into Zaxwerks ProModeler to create individual 3D spline models. Sometimes I use the Illustrator splines in Strata 3D, but with either program, I export the finished 3D model as an OBJ file. From there, the OBJs go individually into Bryce 6.0 for rendering.

The original layered Illustrator file is exported to Photoshop as a guide and as a way to use parts directly in Photoshop. I take the rendered Bryce files of the 3D items, with their attendant clipping path, into Photoshop and lay them onto the layered Illustrator layout to properly position the items to fit my original design. The clipping path is used to select-out the unwanted parts of the rendering so only the dimensional object is retained.

Many times the Bryce output is grey shaded, not colored in Bryce. I use several image-enhancing steps in Photoshop to get the items the colors I want. Occasionally I do the coloring and texturing in Bryce and bring in a colored rendering, but only if I'm looking for a special effect, or a metallic or reflective appearance.

The rest of the work is finished in Photoshop, and is frequently a multi-layered file.
